Ik vermoed dat Bob Dylan, of beter gezegd zijn uitgever, begon met het heruitbrengen van oudere, en vaak niet regulier uitgebrachte opnames. In 1985 bracht CBS Biograph uit. Een verzamelbox met drie cd’s, met een ratjetoe aan niet eerder uitgebrachte opnames. Zes jaar later verscheen de eerste van een nog steeds lopende reeks The bootleg series.
Anyway. Sinds de jaren negentig is het aantal box-sets als het ware explosief toegenomen. In dit artikel presenteer ik tien stuks, van tien verschillende artiesten. Bob Dylan staat in deze top tien bovenaan. In 2008 verscheen deel 8 uit the bootleg series onder de titel Tell tale signs. In mijn ogen een absoluut meesterwerk; sterker zijn beste plaat van de laatste veertig jaar. In de lijstjes hieronder geef ik aan dat deze verzamelcd mijn plaat van het jaar was: *2009.
